Autumn TDM

✖ Test Drive Meme
Ⅰ. ARRIVAL
You can read all about your character's arrival in the game lore.
The island looks very much like a cute little seaside town from New England, the sort overrun with tourists in the summer. But it’s not summer anymore, is it? No. Even on warm days the air holds a secret knife-edge of chill. Autumn is here.

The gently rolling hills beyond the little town are alive with reds and oranges and yellows, a riot of fall colours just begging to be used as the backdrop for a Hallmark movie. The town itself is likewise picture-perfect, with a bandstand in the middle of the park at the center of town where sometimes bake sales are held during the day and local concerts in the evenings. Mr. Terwilliger from nearby Terror Lake is even going to put on a one-man performance of the entire score of the H.M.S. Pinafore! Is there a church painted white with a red roof? You bet your ass there is. There’s little restaurants and corner shops that will keep you happily fed, and all sorts of little tourist shops that will keep you up to your neck in shitty keychains and postcards.
Ⅱ. PSL 4EVAH
The Coffee Shop AU is an alternate universe fanfiction trope; in most cases, one of two characters is the barista, and the other is or becomes their favorite customer.
Love it? Hate it? Too bad, you’re living it.
That’s right - succumb to the siren call of pumpkin spice and walk through the doors of C’Ya Latte and you’ll find yourself either in line like a normal customer, or suddenly and inexplicably behind the counter. Hope you know how to work that milk steamer.
Regardless of what role you suddenly find yourself in, you won’t be able to leave the coffee shop until a full shift has been completed. Not unless one of you notices that the tip jar on the counter is suspiciously radiant. Thanks for the tip! reads the sign in bubbly letters that actually sparkle, and yes, it’s a clue: if one of you offers up some heartfelt advice to the other, the coffee shop doors will unlock themselves.
Ⅲ. PUMPKIN PATCH KIDS
CW: Monsters, blood
If you wander just outside of town, you’ll find a road that is lined on either side with trees displaying their autumn colours. There’s a sign reading “this way to the PUMPKIN PATCH!” with a little arrow pointing down the road, and should you take a stroll you’ll find yourself at a quaint little farm. There’s a big red barn, some goats and chickens you can go and gawk at, an apple orchard, and of course the advertised pumpkin patch.
There is a little stand set up by the entrance to the farmyard, and as you pass by the kid manning it will hand you a cellphone.
“It’s for the scavenger hunt,” she explains with a smile, also handing you a list. “You and a partner have to take a picture of each of the things, and then you come back here and you get a photo prize!”
The list reads:
If this is a little too twee for your tastes, you can of course choose instead to wander the fields of pumpkins and apples. There will be children running around right up until the sun begins to set - one little tyke in orange footie pajamas seems intent on chasing after you as you walk, ducking out of sight whenever you turn to try and see him clearly. He appears to be wearing some sort of mask, which is a little weird.
As the sun bleeds out in the western sky, the shadows of the orchard grow long and longer. If you choose to wander out that way you’ll find that the neat rows of apple trees have begun to twist and turn, creating a maze that spirals inward. Sunlight fades from bruise yellow to purple, and in the twilight you find yourself at the center of the orchard.
There is a mound of earth here. If you walk around it, you will find it’s not just any pile of dirt: it’s a barrow. There is an old, nearly collapsed entrance there just barely showing above the ground. In front of this there is a stone into which the following is carved:
“Accept this sacrifice.”
As you read the words, you feel the ground shiver beneath your feet as the barrow splits open and a creature pulls itself from the stinking womb of the earth.
It is ten feet tall with an emaciated body and a grotesquely oversized head. The skull looks pulpy, and the face is a grinning nightmare of teeth and milky white eyes. Its fingers are nearly as long as its forearms, tipped with claws that cut through flesh as easy as butter.
Looks like it’s time for you to run.
But you cannot seem to find a way out of the maze… even if you can fly. You just seem to wind up back at the center no matter what you do. And the creature is always there, moving toward you as soon as you stumble back to its grave.
Accept this sacrifice.
What could that mean? Has someone given something up for you? Now would be a great time to acknowledge it. Have you given something up for someone else, and resented it secretly all these years? Maybe time to get it off of your chest.
Or maybe you’re much more literal. Maybe you carry a sharp object everywhere you go and don’t mind spilling a little blood… yours or your companions.
Whatever you do, you better do it fast or the creature will sink its talons into you and pull you back into its final resting place.
Ⅳ. CRAFT FAIR
There is of course a town hall in a town this quaint, and it of course is host to a craft fair! It is, after all, right before the holidays! What holidays? Well. All of them! Look, just come get your uncle some salmon rub and your mother-in-law a candle or something.
The hall has tables end to end, and there’s plenty to buy: jams and jellies, honeys, tea blends, and even locally roasted coffee. There’s jewelry and scarves and knockoff UGGS, knitted toys and home decor that reminds you to live, laugh, and love.
There’s also a row of tables near the back of the hall where you can actually sit down and do some crafts yourself!
There’s a few stations. A lot of locals seem to be making some sort of masks out of straw and twigs and burlap - there doesn’t seem to be any room for you there, though.
More accessible and less unusual are stations to make friendship bracelets at. There’s bright coloured thread and easy to follow instructions! It’ll be fun! No, really - as you work, you’ll start to feel quite relaxed and pleasant. Whoever you’re working next to will also seem super easy to talk to. Who knows? By the end you might have a new friend to give your bracelet to.
Greetings, prospective Travelers! Welcome to the Autumn 2021 POLYMYTHOS test drive meme and thank you for your interest in our game! Our next application round will run from August 27 - September 3, 2021. For the Autumn season, we invite you to use this TDM to explore but one of many, many islands within the Endless Isles; use it as an opportunity to introduce and familiarize yourself with the game, form connections with other characters, and just have some fun. (Perhaps while also getting some solid samples together for your application!)
Use the prompts provided below as-is or feel free to write your own set within the environment detailed in each. You're even welcome to access the network via your character's ScryWatch. While there will be some inevitable changes, TDMs may count as game canon and some islands may be revisited in the future. Be mindful of your surroundings -- you never know how you and your fellow Travelers might affect this place in the long run.
Killer idea: pumpkin spice playlists!!

Notes:
1. Please remember to mark threads appropriately with Content Warnings when necessary.
2. These prompts are a jumping off point - how they affect your character and their development is up to you.
3. These residents of the island are normal humans. Killing them is possible and will affect the colour grading of your Scrywatch depending on the situation.
4. Any food is safe to eat, and is consumable by non-human entities.
5. Have fun!

1. A full shift is eight hours, regardless of what time you may have wandered into the shop. Both customer and barista are trapped for the duration.
2. Yes, the barista gets free drinks.

- apple cider or hot chocolate (you can find these at our concession!)
- something you think is truly beautiful!

Notes:
1. If characters complete the photo scavenger hunt, they will each receive a photograph of an important memory.
2. The only way out of the maze is to either cop to a sacrifice - the character’s or another’s - or spill some blood in front of the creature.
3. You can try to fight the creature, but it is extremely difficult to kill. It also has a tendency towards not staying dead, and might pop up again later during your visit on the island when you least expect it.
4. No, you don’t get to keep the cellphone.

Questions, comments, concerns?
Molly Hayes | Marvel Comics
"C'ya Latte?!? That's totally amazing!!"
Molly giggles as she pulls the door open, setting off the jingle of the quaint little bell above. It's so retro!!! This feels like those old movies she used to watch with her parents. She looks around, taking in all of her surroundings with wide gleaming eyes. Honestly, she didn't know how she'd ended up here, or if this was a dream, or what. Her friends weren't here, and that bummed her out a little - well, a lot - but so far she'd had fun. The pumpkin patch had been so cool.
Of course, now she was pretty thirsty and had a powerful need for some caffeine or the usual lethargy that came from exerting herself would claim her. She'd gotten better at not passing out right away when she used her powers, but she still got so tired. Without friends here to catch her, she knew better than to let sleep happen by herself.
She skips right up to the counter, which she can only just peer over. "I want a PSL please!!!" Call Molly Basic if you want, but she was downright giddy at the prospect of her first PSL of the season.
While she waited, she bounced foot to foot and admired her new bracelet. It gleamed bright green at her, and she'd managed to find a cute bandana that matches it. She had no idea what it was for, but it sure was pretty.
III - A: (Because Molly is the most twee and don't you forget it.)
A Pumpkin Patch?!? Molly could not be more excited. She was an LA kid, an urban creature through and through, so she had limited experiences with farm kitsch, and this was like freaking Disneyland to her. No, better. She'd been to Disneyland. Never in her life had she gone to a legit pumpkin patch to pick out a pumpkin, do a hayride, or get her face painted with fun fall designs.
When the girl that's just a bit older than her flags her down, Molly walks over to the stand and accepts the list and starts to turn away the cell phone.
"It's okay, I have my-" She pats her pockets with the increasingly frantic motions of someone who's lost something. "Oh no!! OH NO!!! My phone!!!! I can't be here without my phone!! Nico will kill me!!! And Chase! And everyone!!" Honestly, all of her friends were pretty protective of her. Also, Molly, like any self-respecting tween, was very, very attached to her phone.
The kid talks her down, likely used to dealing with new Travelers who are just coming to realize what they did and didn't have from their previous lives. It takes a few minutes, and Molly is still chewing her lower lip by the end, but she's not freaking out and is even reading the list, growing more and more pleased with the possibilities of joy it presents.
Until she remembers something.
"But...but I don't have a partner..." Her whole face wibbles as she faces the reality of what she didn't have from her previous life that was far more important than her phone.
Unfortunately, the kid helming the scavenger hunt stand is far less well versed in dealing with this kind of loss. She starts gesturing frantically to anyone who might possibly volunteer to be a random child's partner for a scavenger hunt.
III-B: (Because Molly does so enjoy punching monsters in the face.)
Having (probably) finished the scavenger hunt, and with no chaperone of any kind, Molly has taken to wandering the fields in delight. This is pure autumnal joy right here. It is everything the city is not. This isn't to say Molly hates the city - she actually quite likes all of its amenities - but this was like wandering through something out of a fantasy novel.
Some kid in orange pajamas seems to be following her, but every time she stops to lift a hand and wave, perhaps to beckon the kid forward to play, he darts away. It just makes Molly shrug and continue her explorations.
The day grows long, the light begins to wane, and she realizes she should start getting back. She darts through some apple trees, trying to take a short cut through an orchard. Instead, the orchard swallows her up. Several confusing twists and turns later and she's at a mound of dirt.
"What the...'accept this sacrifice'? What sacrifice?"
She is thoroughly confused, and then a monster pops out.
"GAH!!!!"
Her eyes flare pink and she punches out instinctively, and the thing's chest literally caves in as it flies back and hits a tree, falling to a broken lump at the tree's base.
"Oh geez, I'm sorry I'm sorry, you surprised me, I'm sorry!!!" She runs up to the broken body of the creature and checks it out. "Please don't be dead! I didn't mean to!! You shouldn't pop out of the ground when you look scary like that!!!"
III - A
I really need to get around to watching Lucifer!
everyone does ;)
I did see his cameo in the Arrowverse crossover event! THAT was brilliant.
it's worth your time :)
I shall add it to the list! It's dangerous because that Lucifer is probably my type of character.

Chloe has always had a soft spot for seasonal coffee beverages. It's just kind of her thing, so it makes perfect sense that, upon spotting a promising-looking coffee shop, she's going to slide in. She could use some caffeine, and maybe a few moments to orient herself to her new surroundings. She's definitely not in LA anymore.
She orders a nonfat PSL with soy milk - she doesn't do dairy - and smiles at the barista, though it doesn't quite reach her eyes. "You seem busy today. You guys must do pretty good business this time of year."
ii. Pumpkin Patch Horror
Chloe loves Halloween, but not like the super scary parts of it. So when she begins wandering the orchard, it seems nice and charming and cute. It's only when the sun starts to set, and she's a little lost, and the shadows lengthen, that it starts to creep her out. Rounding a corner, she spots a mound, and her senses all go on high alert.
"Hello? Anyone here?"
Her hand goes to her hip, where her gun is concealed beneath her jacket. Did something just move on the mound?
iii. Craft fair
She scans the tables, an almost-sad look on her face. Trixie would love this. She misses her daughter so much.
"I don't suppose we could take these back home with us?" she asks someone at the table where the friendship bracelets are made.
iv. Scrywatch: All Travelers

Roxy Spaulding| Gen13 | OTA
Luckily for Roxy she was already used to a lot of bizarre things happening in her life, you couldn't be a government created superhero and not experience a slew of weird shit these days. Government goons, space aliens and even a few giant kaiju creatures had somewhat prepared her for being suddenly whisked away from her own reality. However none of those things had prepared her for somewhere so.....quaint.
"Huhn....I feel like I'm on the set of a Hallmark movie." She says as she looks around the cute little seaside town.
"....I wonder if they sell cigarettes here."
Ⅱ. PSL 4EVAH:

Yeah she's chewing gum behind the counter, what about it?
"Welcome to C’Ya Latte, can I like, take your order?"
Sub-text: Omg please kill me
Ⅲ. PUMPKIN PATCH KIDS:
The second someone, especially a Traveler ripped away from their usual world, is given a cellphone the intelligent thing to do would be to check and see if you could call someone back home. A loved one perhaps, or even 911 if you were really desperate. Roxy meanwhile immediately uses it to look at herself via the selfie camera.
"Omg this filter is kind of cute right? Look it gives you freckles and a leaf crown." She says and moves so you are also in frame.

Luke Skywalker | Star Wars (Imperial AU) | OTA
[ Arrival ]
Luke still felt shaken as he stepped foot on the almost idyllic little island, and it wasn't from the slight chill in the air. He knew he had a large destiny ahead of him -- the massive man he had to call his commanding officer and pretend he wasn't related to was a constant reminder of this -- but being reminded that he wasn't doing it right felt like a slap in the face. Apparently trying wasn't good enough for the greater universe, and he found his gaze drifting from his quaint surroundings to the orange band around the wrist of his prosthetic. It... felt bad, like whatever it was that dragged him here was judging him harshly for his actions and reactions. Of course, he couldn't know that for sure, but it still made him feel awful.
A faint, frustrated noise escaped from him after a moment, and he stubbornly shoved the band up as far as it could go, careful not to snag it on part of the metal, before snapping his sleeve down over it.
"They could have at least let me keep my compression gauntlet," he grumbled to himself, absently flexing his metal fingers, and not paying attention to anyone that may have overheard him.
[ PSL 4EVAH ]
The only reason he entered the shop was because he saw someone leaving with a steaming cup of what could only be caff. With everything that had happened at Jedha before ending up in this place, and everything that was this place, the thought of a warm drink filled with miraculous energy was like a siren's call for him. Being able to get such Force blessed liquid for himself was one thing.
Suddenly finding himself behind a counter, with someone giving him an order he only understood the caff part of, was another thing entirely.
"Y-you want a what?" he squeaked out, looking around at the various tools and machines behind the counter, and feeling more helpless now than he ever had while in the middle of a galaxy spanning war.
Help!
[ Pumpkin Patch
Kids]Luke had never been in a place that was so crisp in the autumn months. The Academy on Prefsbelt IV was either really cold or really hot depending on the time of year, thanks to it being nestled in the middle of the mountains, and both Tatooine and Mustafar were just hot. Breathing the air here was like taking a bite out of fruit that came fresh from the chiller, and it was oddly refreshing in the same way. For the moment, he felt like a kid again, and the actual kids that were playing around helped. He found himself smiling for the first time in awhile, running around and joining in their fun, and trying not to be too creeped out by the masked child he could just see on the edges of his vision every now and then.
He didn't realize until the kids had disappeared and the sky was burning orange that he had no idea where he was.
"Kriff," he swore under his breath as he tried to reach out to the Force for guidance, but it felt... twisted, muddled; almost like the Force itself was just as lost as he was. He shook his head, cupping his hands around his mouth and calling out, "Is anyone out there?!"

Markus | Detroit: Become Human
Markus truly does not know what led him into the coffee shop. He has been wandering this strange new place quietly, his mind literally whirling as he takes in facts that make no sense. The hows and the whys and the whos are unknown. The answer is likely that he knows very well how to fit into human society, and coffee shops can give plenty of clues as to what the people here are like. He gets a drink which he pointedly does not actually take a sip of, sitting and observing as he tries to keep his calm. What could Carl say? What would North say?
It seems mostly normal but no one is saying anything that gives much away, so Markus gets up after a reasonable amount of time, planning on leaving. Instead he finds that he cannot. Confused and with growing dread, he is no stranger to pushing past the impossible, but this is the type of situation with no coding explanation. It simply ... is. His mismatched eyes - one green, one blue - dart around the coffee shop, suspicious now. Someone is doing this. But no one else seems to be acting as if they notice it.
He stifles his immediate urge to run at the door until something gives, remembering his center, his internal levelness. Markus can be seen in the coffee shop by then wandering every corner of it as if looking for another exit, until he goes back to the counter and fixes his eye on the barista.
"Where am I? I don't think I remember the name of the town."
III part 1.
Markus has walked much of the area by now, his sharp eyes looking out for anything that stands out, anything that might give him some clues. He is no Connor so he doesn't have the analytical police mindset, but he is observant. The pumpkin patch doesn't seem like it will help him get his answers, but he follows the sign regardless. This is far more rustic than what he is used to. The quiet is almost eerie in comparison.
His focused unsettled attention softens when he sees the young girl, forcing a gentle smile for her. If nothing else, the feel of the cellphone in his hand is more familiar than anything on this farm. "Thank you," he says, turning his gaze to look for anyone else around. Markus no longer wants to follow any orders, but this is not one. Perhaps he can make a partner with more information.
III pt 2
Later on, Markus walks the fields. There is something dearly beautiful and unique about this place, or at least it is for him. Carl would find it very soothing or at least charming. He thinks about what colors of paint would best present the look here, but he no longer thinks fondly of days cleaning brushes. He sees the little child following him and assumes it's a game, turning as he ducks out of sight and doing it on purpose multiple times to see how fast he can be.
The stranger and more twisty it is, the more it reminds him of the android graveyard, which is far from a good memory. It makes him tense and unsettled, unsure how he managed to get so lost when he has an android's sense of direction and clear data paths to follow. Some part of Markus is warning him to stay away from the barrow, it seems unwise, and that is true soon enough.
When the creature comes from the ground, he already starts to back off, processing the details about it as quickly as possible. He is no fool. He immediately starts to run. After everything he's survived, everything he has managed, the fact that he keeps coming straight back to this monstrous creature and those words, it seems deeply karmic somehow.
He has nothing to fight it with and reason has been the only thing that truly saved him all this time. Markus can be seen facing down the monster, hands clenched, chin up high. "I have no blood to sacrifice, and I will not take any of yours. Do as you will."

Palamedes Sextus | The Locked Tomb Trilogy
His eyes snap open which is the first detail to really throw him. They should not be opening. Palamedes' eyes dart around to take in the area. It's fuzzy and completely alien. He can smell something crisp and salty (the sea?) and he is really at a loss as to how any of this can make sense. It simply doesn't. Nothing in the many books he's read over his life have any details that he can draw from. Nothing he's heard. This is not any type of afterlife possibility someone might have theorized of, as far as he can tell.
There is nothing he can do if he stands still, nothing he can learn, so he sets out. In the start, he cannot stop from looking like someone who definitely does not belong there. Palamedes is turning as he takes in the chill, the vivid colors, a town that looks completely out of touch with anything he's known. It takes him a good half hour before he reminds himself that this is hardly the way to blend in and get answers, so he schools his face to be calmly curious, but less adrift.
He ends up in a tourist shop, looking at each postcard with a puzzled look on his face. Or standing outside of shops and peering into the windows.
II. C'Ya Latte
"I'm sorry, what?" Palamedes is unfailingly polite but he swears despite understanding most of the words here, the term PSL has to be in another language. He adjusts his glasses after they dip down his nose, darting his eyes around the shop. He has no idea how he ended up behind the counter and at a complete loss, snapping his pale gaze back to the person in front of him. The person repeats their order.
"I'm sorry we don't have ... pumpkin ... spice." A lie here seems more reasonable of a direction than to admit he has no idea what anything behind the counter is. He rubs a hand through dark hair. He can almost picture Camilla's deadpan look and amusement at his predicament. You have solved worse problems than a hot drink.
The orders keep coming and he does his best, getting close looks at the machines, his glasses fogging up entirely whenever he tries to steam the milk. Palamedes manages to serve up drinks; whether or not they are in any way what was ordered, he truly does not know, but his concoctions are probably interesting either way!
IV. Arts and Crafts
After a daunting experience around pumpkins, Palamedes ends up at a craft fair, which he doesn't know what to think of at first. He understands the concept and looks at the wares curiously, but this really is such a simple type of existence. He is most interested in the masks that natives seem to be making, but when he politely asks to join, there is no room. Hm. He has a very good instinct for trouble and he can feel it at the edges, underneath his skin here. He ends up at a table to try his hand at creation.
Palamedes is quick in mind and in fingers too, so he starts threading colorful threads with very little problem. He would have a more interesting time working on masks, he could get into that, but the thread is what he has to he gets to work. After time wandering, the calm that comes over him is greatly appreciated, so simple that he barely thinks twice about it. Instead he builds bracelet after bracelet, each one more colorful or intricate than the last.
V. Scythwatch: All travelers
If you have not dealt with the creature in the pumpkin patch yet, I recommend you avoid going entirely. But if you do get caught by it, offer up blood, it seems to be quite literal in the idea of a sacrifice.

alina starkov (shadow & bone)
alina yelps when the milk steamer goes off. an awful, shrieking hiss of steam. like a possessed tea kettle. whoever is on shift with her pulls the dirty milk pitcher from under the steamer nozzle and alina watches, baffled, as they pour a design into the drink before sliding it across the counter for a customer. ]
Would you ... Could you make me one of those? [ and that's how she winds up behind the counter laughing and joking and learning how to make latte art instead of tending to customers who come up. in fact, if anyone tries to get a drink, they're liable to be interrupting alina as she smears latte foam across her coworker's nose. ]
and then, as if by some already-built instinct, of the sign. accept this sacrifice. her cellphone flash is hard and white, suddenly cutting through the dusk.
something in her expression deadens in its wake. the grin goes cold. the earth churns, and cold dread rolls through her. the creature emerges, and she screams. ]
